Congratulations to our Director of Lifesaving, Mikaela Sutherland who represented Wanda SLSC at the Surf Life Saving Australia National Leadership College. Mikaela joined a group of elite leaders in our organisation who will lead us into the future. The NLC provides an exciting opportunity for members within the movement to further develop their leadership skills and continue to positively contribute to the success of SLS. This is an extremely rare opportunity for members and is highly selective. You can find out more about the NLC here.

WANDA’S 4TH ANNUAL TRADIES ONE CLUB CARNIVAL
1 February 2020

In perfect summer conditions, over 900 competitors hit Wanda beach on Saturday for the annual Wanda SLSC Tradies One Club surf carnival.

Leading athletes, masters and nippers from clubs across the greater Sydney region took part in part in the Wanda SLSC event, now in its fourth year.

The Wanda SLSC Tradies One Club carnival provided an important hit out for competitors in the lead up to the Branch and State Championships in coming weeks, and the Australian Surf Life Saving Titles, to be held on the Gold Coast in April.

Overall carnival honours went to home club Wanda SLSC, winning the Tradies Trophy for highest club pointscore, followed by North Cronulla, Cronulla, Elouera, South Maroubra and North Bondi.

Wanda SLSC took out the coveted Gerard Malouf and Partners Mixed Ocean Lifesaver relay, the last event of the day involving athletes across all disciplines.

“Our carnival brings together competitors of all ages, gender and ability” said Greg Allum OAM, carnival organiser.
“It’s all about young and older generations participating together, enjoying a great day out and putting their lifesaving skills on display.

“A real highlight for me was the competitor with disability events. They’ve been an important addition to our surf sports carnivals, and it was fantastic to see the young competitors taking part in many different events today.

“Carnivals like ours cannot happen without support and we particularly thank sponsors the Tradies, Audi Sutherland, Brooks, Channel 9, Fitness First, Gerard Malouf and Partners and Southside Animal Hospital, as well as the stall holders who assisted create a wonderful festival atmosphere” said Mr Allum.

Wanda SLSCs’ star ironwoman Britney Pierce took part in the carnival, fresh from her debut season in the NutriGrain Ironwoman series.

“Today has been such a great day, I love seeing all the nippers out here giving it a go.

“I’ve been involved in surf club since I was 5 years old. I hope all these nippers can keep participating and get as much out of it as I have,” said Britney.

Winners of the major Open age events included:

– Hayden Allum (Wanda) and Britney Pierce (Wanda), took out the Tradies Open Ironman and Ironwoman races
– Charlie Berko (North Bondi) and Taihna Woodger (North Cronulla) won the Fitness First Open 2km Beach Runs
– Carla Papac (Wanda) and Noah Havard (North Bondi), finished first in the Tradies 2km Ski Challenges
– Michael Hannah (Elouera) won the Brooks Marc Leabeater Open Men’s Beach Sprint
– Leah Rampoldi (North Cronulla), Tradies Open Women’s Beach Sprint

Wanda once again hosted another successful Beach Safety Workshop for international students studying at La Lingua Language School on 29 November. We had 25 attendees learning about the importance of swimming between the flags and addressing beach safety awareness at our beaches.

Wanda has educated over 180 CALD people this season in the hope of preventing the drownings seen across our coastline.

The message is simple, NO FLAGS, NO SWIM!
