We had some fantastic news this week for Surf Life Saving in New South Wales with $16 million dollars of additional funding for Surf Life Saving NSW to ensure that we continually innovate and improve our service moving forward. Thanks to our local Member Mark Speakman MP for supporting this announcement. Wanda will use its state government grant to renovate and upgrade the existing male toilets and change rooms.

PATROL MEMBER OF THE MONTH
November
 2018

November’s Patrol Member of the Month award goes to TWO members.

1. Mia Ross on Patrol 1; and
2. Noah Doran on Patrol 10.

Both members were held in high reprimand by their patrol captains who said they went above and beyond what is expected of them on patrol at such a young age.

Mia has been acknowledged as being someone who leads from the front, and a role model for the SRC members on her patrol with her maturity and the responsibility she takes on when on patrol.

Noah has been eager to learn all sorts of skills on patrol from patrolling in the tower, practising his board skills and going out on the IRB. This came in handy as he (as an SRC) did some impressive rescues on his patrol at the end of November, which were noted to be in significantly challenging conditions by his patrol captain.

Both members will be rewarded with a choice of a piece of Wanda merchandise or a $50 Ripcurl voucher.

Well done Mia and Noah.

Thank you to all the members who rolled up their sleeves and donated blood in the Bate Bay Blood Drive. Fortunately, we didn’t come last but sadly we will be handing over the trophy to Cronulla. The good news – collectively 96 donations were made by the Bate Bay Club members and we helped save 288 LIVES which exceeded the target, so well done to all those who participated.

However, despite all your amazing work during the challenge the need for blood never stops so we would encourage everyone to continue donating as frequently as possible, particularly over the Christmas/New Year period where we always need donations to help us meet the demand of patients in hospitals over the festive period. Give the gift of life this Christmas!

For more information, see the website or call The Red25 Team at the Australian Red Cross Blood Service on 1300 886 524.

Congrats to the Sydney Interbranch team led by Wanda’s Elyssa Pierce and Michael Kember on their outstanding performances at the 2018 NSW SLS Interbranch titles at Black Head Beach on 8 and 9 December.

Elyssa was again named “team captain”, with Wanda athletes taking 15 of the available 40 representative spots!

We saw two days of fantastic competition and great sportsmanship in victory and defeat. Well done to everyone.

Save lives without getting wet this season!

Thanks Karen Bonar and David Jones who joined Wanda’s donor list along with Wanda’s President, Club Captain and JAG Chairperson who have helped save lives with their Blood Donation. Thank you! Now it’s your turn to help WANDA defend the winning title for the Bate Bay Surf Clubs Blood Drive for 2018. Last year the challenge saved over 200 lives!

Please make your appointment today and roll up your sleeves! The challenge ends on Saturday 8th December!

The Bate Bay Surf Clubs are again competing to give the most donations during the Bate Bay Surf Clubs Blood Drive 2018 from Saturday 27th October to Saturday 8th December.

Blood donations help people with cancer, immune diseases, childbirth complications, burns and many other serious medical conditions.

To participate in the challenge simply make an appointment and give blood between 27 October to 8 December to have your donations added to Wanda’s tally. We’d love to see you helping out, so don’t forget to send us a photo to officeadmin@wandaslsc.com.au.

New donors also add extra points to Wanda’s tally so if you’re an existing donor please encourage any friends and family members to participate. If you’ve never donated before make an appointment and score double points for Wanda!

Can’t donate? Encourage your friends and family to get involved. The more people from Wanda donating, the more chance we’ll have to WIN!

For more information, see the website or call The Red25 Team at the Australian Red Cross Blood Service on 1300 886 524.

Wanda SLSC competitors have claimed 21 World Champion titles at the Lifesaving World Championships, which have just wrapped up in Adelaide.

The event attracts competitors from across the world, in Youth, Open and Masters categories, across a range of surf life saving disciplines.

Wanda’s Jock Campbell trained beach run team were outstanding, taking 8 World Championship titles from 8 events entered.

Ali Najem and Melissa Campbell both took Gold in the Open 2km Beach run event. Najem then combined with Kai Hammond, and Campbell with Chloe Gentle, to win the 2x1km Open beach relay events.

Young gun runners Kai Hammond and Jessie Phelps took out the male and female Youth 2km run respectively, capping off their strong Australian seasons.  Repeating the Opens success, Hammond combined with Zac Keelan and Phelps with Chloe Gentle to win the 2x1km Youth relay events.

Hayden Allum dominated the Masters 30-34 male ocean category, taking home four individual World titles in the surf race, ski, board and ironperson. He also combined with Cameron Pyett to win the board rescue in the same category.

A special World title to the Masters 110y beach relay team of Mairead Brannock, Greer Calabro and Lauren Campbell. The hardworking trio juggle their children, families, work and university with their training, volunteer patrols and supporting younger club members.

Other individual world champions included Paul Buttel (40-44 Ironman), Stuart Braine (40-44 Board race), Chris Iredale (60-64 Board race). Wanda Masters teams also took world championship honours in the 40-44 board rescue, 110y surf team, 130y surf team and 110y taplin.

Wanda SLSC Director of Surf Sports Greg Pierce said the competitors are a credit to themselves, Wanda SLSC and the sport.

“Our large team took part in pool competition, ocean, beach and March Past events, with some outstanding results across right across the board.”

“It’s hard to pick highlights but one would include the Allum family, Chris, Greg and Hayden, combined to win Bronze in the male 110y surf teams race.”

“Massive congratulations to the Jock Campbell led beach team who, as always performed exceptionally well, including a special silver medal in the 2km run to Jock himself.”

“Over and above all the results, team spirit was great and the whole experience was thoroughly enjoyed by those who attended.”

Thanks to our former Club Captain Kenny Smith [pictured at Taren Point Public School] during one of his surf life saving education classes. That completes the last of our education sessions for this season.

“Kenny has done a truly wonderful job – I have been to all the sessions across several schools and  have seen first hand the knowledge, passion and teaching skill of Kenny that have made these sessions fun and engaging for the kids. The kids (and teachers) have learnt a lot about sun/surf safety and we have had a few new nippers join the club which is a bonus. The club banner and all the props looked fantastic.

We will most definitely look at rolling this out on a larger scale next season.”
