WANDA NIPPER RED FINS

The Red Fins are now 6 Strong with another one hopefully joining soon. Over the last 5 weeks you may have seen us running alongside the mainstream age groups in our distinctive Red Caps with Blue stripes – Sort of looks like a reverse of the Wanda Competition Cap!

Like most of the younger age groups, with some challenging surf conditions it’s been a slow start to the season, so we’ve been focusing on beach activities and education, however with the great conditions last weekend, our kids were able to get in the water and catch some waves with some of the Senior Girls from Patrol 1.

Coming up on Sunday 25th of November, during the 4-Way carnival, the Bate Bay clubs with special needs programs will be running our first combined event – The Bate Bay Fins 4-Way Fun Day Carnival. We will be running a series of Nipper events, focused on participation and fun, followed by a BBQ and Medal Presentation for the kids. The Bate Bay Fins groups are the Cronulla Blue Fins, the Elouera Yellow Fins & the Wanda Red Fins and collectively we have approximately 25 kids with various challenges including Autism, Physical \ Intellectual Disabilities and Vision \ Hearing impairments.

If you’re not competing in the 4-Way we’d love for you to come down and cheer on All the Bate Bay Fins or get involved – Water Safety Volunteers would be appreciated!

WANDA TAKES ON THE WORLD!

Wanda SLSC competitors will take on the world at the 2018 Lifesaving World Championships, kicking off in Adelaide on Friday 16th.

Wanda will be represented by a 53 person strong team at the event, which attracts some of the world’s best lifesaving athletes.

Wanda SLSC Surf Sports Director Greg Pierce says the Championships are a great event, involving competitors from U/16 through to Masters in a range of surf lifesaving disciplines.

“We’re proud to be sending such a large team to the Championships. We have a very strong Masters Team that includes former Australian Ironman Champion Greg Allum and Former Olympian and Australian Decathlon Champion Peter Hadfield.

“Our Opens Mens Beach Relay Team will be hoping to defend their World title, achieved in Holland in 2016.

“Wanda’s 2K Beach Run Team, coached by Jock Campbell, is extremely talented and should do very well, led by Australian Champions Chloe Gentle, Ali Najem and Kai Hammond. The beach team is also poised to do well in the 2km beach relay event, newly added to the Championships program.”

The Lifesaving World Championships will run from 16 November to 2 December 2018. Conducted every 2 years, it showcases excellence in lifesaving sports and rescue; attracting the most talented and skilled lifesaving athletes to compete for the title of World’s best.

November 14, 2018

At approximately 10:35am on Sunday Morning (11/11/2018) the Wanda Patrol (Patrol 1) was alerted to an unresponsive child on the beach near Track 15, halfway between the Wanda and Elouera Clubhouses. The Wanda Patrol Captain dispatched the patrol’s ART accredited Lifesaver and another Lifesaver (Bronze Medallion) to the incident with the Oxy Viva\AED and the First Aid kits. On the way to the scene, the Patrol received assistance from a member of the Wanda Nipper IRB crew getting the equipment to the patient as quickly as possible.

On arriving at the scene, the team found the unresponsive child being managed by an Off Duty Sutherland Lifeguard, assisted by a member of the Wanda Nippers Water Safety team keeping the patients airway opened. The Lifeguard informed the Lifesavers that the patient was a 3 year old male, which had collapsed on the beach from a seizure. The Wanda team took control of the child’s head / airway as Denny Rowlands administered oxygen therapy assisting Council Lifeguards until the Ambulance arrived shortly after. The child maintained breathing and later regained consciousness. He was transported to hospital shortly after.

Luke Cusack, Kaylene Walker, Rob Rybanic, Denny Rowlands, Hayden Berry, Brayden Gossling, Natalie Buckley, Brett Porteous and Kenneth Smith should all be extremely proud of the way that they conducted themselves throughout this process. Whether directly administering the Oxygen, keeping the crowds away, directing the ambulance to the patient or effecting constructive radio communications to Surfcom all involved acted extremely professional from which the Wanda Surf Life Saving Club is very proud.

Surf Lifesaving Sydney Duty Officers were also tasked to the scene.

October 24, 2018

On behalf of the Club Captain, Wanda Surf Club is calling for members to nominate for the new sub-committee, being the Youth Executive Committee (YEC).

What is YEC?

This new committee is established to encourage Young people of WANDA SLSC to get involved with the Board of Directors (reports directly to the Club Captain) about potential changes, proposed upcoming projects, pressing issues and improving standards.

This committee will encourage young people within the club to have a say on specific matters, and play a role in shaping the club moving into the future. This is a great opportunity for those looking to have a say and make a tangible difference to the way the Club operates and/or key projects that the Club is working on.
When and Where will YEC be held?

The location for YEC will be at the Surf Club (either in the office or upstairs depending on what is available). The meetings/workshops will be held on the last Thursday of every month at the Surf Club starting at 6:00PM.

Click here to check out further details.
